400:
The Yamato clan of central Japan declared itself the most powerful. This was the start of a monarchy in Japan.

500:

According to legend an Indian Brahman started the Khmer kingdom and brought Indian culture and traditions to the region.  This was the origin of a very powerful Indian influenced kingdom that is now known as Cambodia.

593:
Prince Shotoku was asked by his aunt, Empress Suiko, to take her throne. He was very impressed by the powerful Chinese culture. Shotoku strongly encouraged his people to learn their ways. He allowed skilled workers from China to enter Japan and even started an embassy with them. Japanese leaders had to follow Confucian principles. Prince Shotoku's guidelines are called the Seventeen Article Constitution. Shotoku also supported Buddhism, causing it to spread quickly. His interest in the Chinese opened a door between the two countries.

Fujiwara clan declines and central government loses power to rich landowners.

Actors develop a form of drama called noh.

Oda Nobunaga begins to reunite Japan.
